Social Media: Just a fad or here to stay?

Social media has given people the ability to create and distribute their own content to an audience and sparks conversation.  While certain social media networks and tools may come and go (there will always be something new and better), social media as a mass is here to stay. It has changed the way we are able to communicate with one another and companies are able to target specific audiences and interact with the consumer.

Through social media we are able to connect with people all over the world with similar interests. As a freelance graphic designer & web developer being active on social media and having a blog has definitely aided me in gaining clients. Bloggers, entrepreneurs and companies are able to find designers whose style and ascetics fit with their branding and company's image. It doesn’t stop with just designers though; social media has helped a wide variety of professionals in various industries across the globe to get their name out there and build valuable connections.

Companies use social media to influence our choices and what we buy. By interacting with us through social media it helps create brand loyalty. I know that I am more likely to purchase something from a company if they have a strong social media presence and relationship with their customers.

Above all else, social media is just plain, simple fun. It’s fun to be able to share photos, videos and your day with everyone. It is a great way to stay in touch, especially with friends & family who may live far away or even in a different country. It has helped people connect and communicate from across the globe. Social media has the ability to build meaningful connections; many people find their partners through dating websites. It has revolutionized the way we are able to connect with one another.

I truly believe that social media is here to stay and personally consider it to be the biggest thing since the Industrial Revolution. Years from now, social media may not exist in the exact same format as it is does today as the digital age is constantly evolving and improving itself. There will always be the next big thing in terms of applications and networks – but social media as a culture isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. It can only get bigger.

  3. Hey this post makes a lot of sense and I can also relate to the one about business since we have started to use social media at work to get our name out there and also to promote different sales and such.
You also touched on many other points which allows readers like myself to get a better understanding and yes social media does help.

But also you have to think of the damage it has done at the same time, not teaching people to interact with each other face to face, addiction to none stop use, and much more.
Here is a link based on social media addiction

So yes I believe social media is a great thing but at the same time it is a great problem.

    Regards

    1. It's true; people who will be growing up in the digital age will lack basic communicational skills if we don't start addressing it. I can already see it happening with some of the younger generations. It doesn't matter how many times I see a toddler with an iPad - it still shocks me. I think this falls on the parents. It's so important that they properly educate their children and realize the negative effects it can have on their development and that they compensate for that and still make sure their child is playing outside. But at the same time it can also enhance their education. These kids will be so incredibly tech-savvy and grow up to be the next Steve Jobs' and Bill Gates' of the world.

In terms of addiction... like with anything, anyone get addicted to something. People can be addicted to the internet as a whole, or a videogame, celebrities, gambling, racing, etc. It is important to educate people though on the dangers of being addicted to the internet and social media as well as many other things. It's all about moderation and being educated.

As a whole though, I think the positive outweighs the negative given the fact that things can be done about the negatives in order to decrease them. It can only be a problem if we allow it to become one.

  4. you make a good point in that we now use social media as a source of personal publicity. I see a lot if use of self promotion by artist. they will set up a twitter or tumbler account post art and use the publicity to advertise their commissions. i think that social media didn't change the things we do but the way we do them.
